Since AHC started online school, many clubs have had to adjust schedules and make some changes to host these clubs online. Holy Cross’s book club had a hard time adjusting at first, but they quickly jumped back on their feet.

Circle of Friends Book Club usually meets once a month to give members time to read each book and they are now using Google Meet. Senior president of the club Katie Rose and moderator Jean Cotter have worked hard to adjust quickly and this club is now meeting more often than they did in school.

“Since the school closure, we have already met twice and played numerous book games, have had discussions, and completed in book trivia on Kahoot,” exclaimed Rose.

Book club likes to include all of their members in participation. They do this through discussion days, choosing books and choosing meeting dates. Through their president, who sends out emails to the club, the members have a say in their availability—which is very important for clubs.

Junior Bianca David explained the general format of the meetings, which take about 30 minutes,

“It’s fun because [the book selection] is a teen book that almost everyone has read, like Hunger Games or something […] the first half [of the meeting] is book discussions and the second half is games,” commented David.

LOTAs do not have to be an avid book-reader to enjoy this club, and new members are always encouraged.

The club members typically do not read that many books during the school year but with remote school they have been able to add more meetings.

“We only read about 2-3 books in a year as a group, but we talk about other books we are reading and we play a lot of trivia games based on books,” said Cotter.

COVID-19 has not stopped the fun in book club and instead has made it a fun distraction in quarantine. With so much time on their hands, students generally are having a hard time finding something to do, so, book club is the club to join for some fun activities and discussions.

“They’re normally all after school from 3-3:30. Contact Mrs. Cotter if you want to join,” added David.
