Seniors from Onyx Club visiting Howard University

On Friday, November 2, seniors in the Onyx Club went to Howard University for a tour of the school.  On a tour led by a Howard Student Ambassador, the Tartans learned about the University’s history and what it offers. The historically Black college was founded in 1867 and was established before the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Howard University is a private, research university comprised of 13 schools and colleges.  Students pursue studies in more than 120 areas leading to undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees. To date, Howard University has awarded 120,000 degrees in the arts, the sciences and the humanities.

Howard University Campus

The historic main campus sits on a hilltop in northwest Washington, D.C., blocks from the storied U Street and Howard Theatre. It is two miles from the U.S. Capitol where many students intern and scores of alumni shape national and foreign policy.

The Onyx students walked around the beautiful campus, which reflects the culture of the university. There are many opportunities to find yourself and define your passion with other students that share similar cultures. The campus was lively and everyone on campus was warm and friendly.

The end of the visit was a stop at the Howard University Bookstore which offered a large variety of books, apparel and gifts.

The students were accompanied by Onyx Club Moderator Debbie Brown and College Counselor Meighan Avalos, and they look forward to visiting other historically Black colleges and universities.
