First annual can-struction contest

Each year during Lent, the LOTAs are asked to bring in cans that will go to the John S. Mulholland Foundation. The cans support the foundation and its food pantries in the DC area that provide food for the working poor.

The week of activities included a can collection by classes, can building competition, tag day paid for with cans, and the Empty Bowl event also paid for with cans.

The tag day added to the plethora of cans the school collected, with LOTAs able to come to school in comfy clothes and pay 2 cans= to $2.

Not only was there a can collection, but for the first time this year, there was a can building competition. The entire AHC community competed to build the best can sculpture in order to win “the Golden Can Opener.” At the end of the week, the Junior class walked away with the prize.

Finally, the week wrapped up with the Empty Bowls evening. This event invited families to have dinner at AHC with an admission fee of 5 cans. There was a coffeehouse of student and faculty performers.

Social Concerns Director Emily Teter organized many of the can activities. She explained, “The ability to give is important for people and though it isn’t direct, the LOTAs are able to provide a can that will turn into someone’s meal.”
