The witch trials of Salem are coming to the Holy Cross stage. Students have began building the set and rehearsing for the spring show, The Crucible.

Director Kate Griffith explained the play’s content is about “the Salem witch trails, where every character is based on real characters. Arthur Miller wrote it during the red scare which was fear of communism the play is an allegory.”

Throughout the play rehearsals, the cast had to memorize their lines to present their show, and the lines take time to memorize. Junior Shelby Wilson explained, “I think the best way to memorize lines is to look through your script and test yourself if you know your lines.”

Also during rehearsals, the action is practiced. Junior Katelyn Menjivar recounted, “Scenes are presented on stage with different members of the cast.”

The scenes are presented in many ways, Wilson explained, “Before scenes are presented, they are first blocked. This is when a director, sometimes the choreographer, places the characters in certain positions for a specific scene. The scenes are then presented when the director finishes blocking.”

Throughout the play, some of the cast have found some of their favorite scenes and lines. “I think my favorite scene is when Mary Warren finally steps up for herself because I love when female characters find their voice and stand up for themselves.” Wilson shared. She continued, “Oh I just remembered a line, it’s from my favorite scene and Mary Warren says: ‘I am eighteen years of age, however single.’ ”

The dates for the production of The Crucible are March 1 to 3.
