Tartans enjoying their trip to Syracuse.

A group of AHC girls from the Moreau Program went to Syracuse University, October 9-11, for a large conference called “State of the Art” about college programs for students with learning challenges.

To get there first they took the Metro from school to Gallery Place, and then they changed trains and went to DCA National Airport. They went through TSA precheck. Catherine, Rosie, Barbara, and Breanna are adults because they have already turned 18 so they had to show their ID’s. Catherine had a passport while Rosie, Barbara and Breanna had state ID’s.

The Tartans ate lunch at the airport. Rosie Pollak said, “I had junk food, and it was so good!”

They flew to LaGuardia in New York and then they flew to Syracuse. Mrs. Philbin’s suitcase and her umbrella were broken by the luggage handlers. When they got to Syracuse, the group took a shuttle to the hotel.

At this conference the students listened to presentations about college programs and other options. Also, they made videos about three things. First, they talked about how to advocate. Second, they talked about how participate at school. Finally, they talked about how speak up for each other. After the video they meet Sean for Born This Way. He spoke about his life a told them could be independent. The students had fun.

The highlight of the trip was the conference’s karaoke party where Paula Cotae sang “Money, Money, Money” by Abba while Breanna Vitak, Joelle Packard, Ruthie Metzger, Rosie Pollak, and Catherine Hunt-Neu sang back up. To celebrate Paula’s 17th birthday, the girls ate cake and ice cream in the Sheraton Hotel where they stayed.

The AHC students said that they met new people at Syracuse and that it was a great experience.
