Several Holy Cross seniors will be playing sports in college this upcoming fall as a result of their hard work, talent, and commitment. For years they have been dedicating countless hours into practicing and improving.
David Geiser has been coaching the varsity volleyball team for 14 years and has seen many LOTAs from all sports commit to playing in college.
“Having a strong overall program with a lot of depth has helped these girls become better athletes,” Geiser stated.
He also believes that they all possess certain traits that helped them to get scouted.
“Some mental characteristics are self-confidence, enthusiasm and resilience,” Geiser explained. “They should be able to take a hit and still keep going.”
Attending Holy Cross has allowed these Tartans to reach their full potential.
“I like it when we play well whether we win or lose, and I like to see it rewarded with the D1 scholarship, which is a huge accomplishment,” Geiser stated.
Senior Meredith Dunsmore will be playing Division 3 soccer at Catholic University in the fall. She has thoroughly enjoyed her time playing the sport at Holy Cross and has built a strong relationship with her team.
“I’m going to miss it because it was a really good environment and it was really fun to be around everyone,” Dunsmore stated. “My favorite part was the people and how I could always just have fun.”
Dunsmore is a dedicated athlete and is motivated to practice even outside of soccer season at Holy Cross.
“I practice three days a week with games and tournaments on the weekends,” Dunsmore mentioned. “Practices are like an hour and a half and sometimes they’re intense but sometimes they’re lighter.”
Senior Mae Zaremba has been on the Holy Cross lacrosse team for all four years. She is committed to playing Division 1 lacrosse at University of Pennsylvania in the fall. Just like Meredith, she is a dedicated athlete outside of the regular season.
“Practices are every day, especially in season, but out of season practice is five days a week.” Zaremba stated. “We do a combination of things but it’s mostly conditioning and stick work.”
Zaremba has spent many years perfecting her lacrosse skills.
“I started when I was in first grade, so I’ve been playing for like 10 years.” Zaremba stated.
Dunsmore has also been playing soccer for over a decade.
“I’ve been doing my sport since I was five,” Dunsmore happily stated. “That’s around 13 years.”
Several factors contributed to Dunsmore’s commitment to Catholic University.
“I like how it was close to home and I really liked the faith aspect of it too,” she noted. “It’ll help me as an athlete because the practices will be harder and longer, and the people I play with and against will be more experienced.”
Zaremba is looking forward to the opportunity to play a Division 1 sport.
“I’m excited for the team aspect,” she said. “Getting to be around a group of girls that are like minded with the same mentality is super motivating.”
Zaremba also had some advice for other LOTAs who aspire to play sports in college.
“I would say consistency is key,” she shared. “Obviously you’re gonna have ups and downs but stay consistent because the moment you don’t want to do something is when you have to do it.”
