Staying Busy During “Coronacation”

With the new changes because of the pandemic of coronavirus these past weeks, schools and businesses all over the world have had to adapt to the changes. Social distancing has been heavily enforced and people are stuck at home all day. It can get a bit boring, so LOTAs have found different ways to entertain themselves.

Before the virus became as widespread as it is now, students had different opinions on whether schools should close or not. Sophomore Taryn O’Leary was in favor of schools closing; she saw how contagious the virus was and thought that it would be smart to close schools and stay home. Since then, O’Leary has enjoyed her time at home and said that it has had a positive effect on her life. She misses her friends but says she has been spending more time with family, going on walks with them or hanging out with them inside.

“The break has affected me very positively so far because I get to spend a lot more time with my family and I get to sleep more, which I wasn’t really doing before,” admitted O’Leary.

Different people have had various activities affected by coronavirus. O’Leary had her spring sport, golf, be suspended. Junior Lucy Polmateer was unable to take her driver’s test. Slowly, things that people would normally be doing have shut down. However, Polmateer says that she has begun doing things that she would normally never do, and enjoying them.

“I’ve started working out and cooking more. I also started running, which I normally hated but now it’s something nice that I’m doing,” said Polmateer.

Jordyn Brock, Assistant Director of Administrations, also has started doing new things. In addition to focusing on her grad school work and keeping up with home workouts, she has found a hobby in learning about photography. However, she doesn’t think she will be able to get through the whole break without getting bored; she admits that she finds herself watching a lot of Netflix and eating out of boredom. However, she’s working very hard to keep herself active and entertained.

“But when I find myself getting bored, I try to switch my routine around to make sure I’m always doing something,” Brock assured.
